Tom Sawyer, is that you?

One of the many things I miss about my grandmother is having someone be overly excited about everything I'd do. Well almost, this excludes the time I got the bright idea to set sail in my grandparents pond....on the pier. Yes, you read that correctly and yes, it is possible. I'm proof of this.

I was about ten years old and summers were spent roaming free on their hundreds of acres, which included three ponds. One of which was close to their house. My dad, uncle and pawpaw had spent a great amount of time building a pier to go fishing on and just finished building a floating piece at the end. It was held up by some large barrels under the water and attached to the main pier by some rope. A regular handyman special.

I had just finished watching the movie Tom and Huck. I was captivated by their adventures! That afternoon before supper, I decided to carry out one of the scenes. So I snuck outside with Mawmaw's scissors, ran to the garage and swiped my uncle's boat paddle and I was off!

It took me about 5 minutes to saw the rope off (I did this for dramatic affect) and soon I was floating on my own boat!! Yes, what could go wrong now?? Turns out when you're a scrawny ten year old you are not the best at making things go the way you want them to. Quickly I started to float to the middle of their huge pond. I could only picture the turtles and fish having me for dinner (Told you I was dramatic).

I yelled and screamed for Mawmaw who quickly came yelling for me to jump to the edge. I replied that I couldn't because the turtles would surely eat my toes!! She eventually got me to jump. Turns out I was just about a foot from the bank and the turtles weren't interested.

Mawmaw laughed at how her granddaughter had such a vivid imagination. Pawpaw never fixed the floating pier. I gave up being Tom Sawyer for a while.
